ARK US Executives
Absolute Return for Kids US (ARK US) is the US gateway to ARK. ARK US supports ARK’s international programs in Health, Education, and Child Protection by building awareness and cultivating individuals and institutional partners in the US. A registered public charity based in New York, ARK US offers donors the opportunity to make social investments in ARK’s innovative programs for vulnerable children worldwide.
ARK US is led by members of the alternative investment industry (see below). ARK’s Trustees and Patrons ensure that 100% of donations support ARK’s on-the-ground programs by underwriting 100% of administrative costs.
Directors
Arpad A. Busson, Chairman
Arpad Busson is the Founder and Chairman of EIM, which manages assets for institutional investors and high net worth individuals in delegated investment management; a management approach based on the evaluation, selection and allocation of assets to the best specialist managers, both alternative and traditional investments, globally. As of 2010, EIM assets under management have surpassed USD $13 billion and since 1992, EIM has allocated on behalf of clients some $8.7 billion to third-party money managers. With over 150 employees worldwide, the group has offices in Geneva, Zurich, London, New York, Tokyo and Gibraltar.
In addition, Arpad is Chairman of the AAA Foundation, the Swiss foundation providing Swiss pension funds with access to investments in multi-manager products.
Philip Falcone
Philip Falcone is the Senior Managing Director of the Harbinger Capital Partners® Funds. He has more than 20 years experience in leveraged finance and leveraged companies. Prior to joining the Harbinger Capital Partners® investment team, he served as head of High Yield trading for Barclays Capital. From 1998 to 2000, he managed all aspects of Barclays’ trading operations, including trading distressed and special situations, managing risk exposure of the desk and overseeing the desk trading and analytical team. Philip held a similar position with Gleacher Natwest, Inc. from 1997 to 1998. Prior to joining Gleacher, he was a Senior High Yield trader at First Union Capital Markets in Charlotte, North Carolina. Before joining First Union in 1995, he structured the leveraged buyout of AAB Manufacturing Corporation, a Newark, NJ based consumer products manufacturing company. He completed this transaction in 1990 and remained President and Chief Operating Officer of the company until 1995. Philip began his career in 1985, trading high yield and distressed securities at Kidder, Peabody & Co. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Harvard University in 1984.
Thomas E. Sandell, Treasurer
Thomas Sandell founded Sandell Asset Management in January 1998 and is the Chairman and CEO. He has been involved in the securities industry since May 1986.
Tom joined Bear Stearns & Co. in May 1989 to establish the proprietary international risk arbitrage operation and to serve as a senior analyst in domestic risk arbitrage. Tom held the title of Senior Managing Director and was second-in-command of the Risk Arbitrage department. Tom previously worked as a securities analyst for Atlantic Finance in Paris from May 1986 to May 1987 and subsequently was head of equity research at Group Delphi in Paris. He received a BS in International Business Administration and Economics from Uppsala University (Sweden) and an MBA in Finance from Columbia Business School.
Tom is a founding Board Member and the current President of The New Leader’s Group of the Institute of International Education, the administrator of the US Government’s Fulbright Program. He is also a Trustee of ARK US (Absolute Return for Kids). Tom was born and raised in Sweden and resides in New York City.
Jeffrey Tarrant, Vice Chairman
Jeffrey Tarrant is Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer of Protégé Partners LLC, an investment management firm that invests in a broadly diversified portfolio of smaller, specialized hedge fund managers. Prior to starting Protégé Partners, Jeffrey was President of Arista Group Inc. where he managed the marketable securities portfolios of ultra-high net worth families seeking absolute returns through a diversified portfolio of hedge funds. From 1998 to 2002, Jeffrey was also a member of the board of The Investment Fund of Foundations (TIFF), the leading investment advisory firm for charitable foundations and institutions.
In 1996, Jeffrey founded Altvest, the hedge fund industry’s first database, analytic and information system. Jeffrey sold Altvest to Investorforce in the summer of 2000, when Altvest was considered by third party sources to be the largest hedge fund commercial database in the world. From 1988 to 1995, Jeffrey managed the capital portfolio of the Thurn und Taxis Family. While in Germany, he managed the marketable securities, hedge fund portfolio and direct investments in the US, UK, and Western and Eastern Europe. After transferring to the US, Jeffrey was given additional responsibilities of restructuring all North American investment holdings. Prior to Thurn und Taxis, Jeffrey was Vice President of Berkeley Asset Management where he co-managed a multi-manager fund.
Jeffrey graduated from Harvard Business School with an MBA in 1985 and has an undergraduate degree in Economics from University of California at Davis.
Blaine Tomlinson
Blaine Tomlinson is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Financial Risk Management (FRM), a global fund of hedge funds group with offices in London, New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Guernsey, Seoul and Sydney. As chairman, Blaine focuses on business strategy development and investment opportunities and initiatives.
Previously, Blaine was director and a board member of AIG Financial Products Group, where he was responsible for establishing, building and managing the European business. He was also an executive director at Nomura International Limited, where he established a swap and structured products group.
Blaine holds a MBA and a degree in Economics (Hons) from the University of Cape Town, and a Bachelor of Economics from Rhodes University.
William A. von Mueffling
William von Mueffling is President and CIO of Cantillon Capital Management, an investment firm with $3.7 billion under management. He was previously Managing Director of Lazard Asset Management responsible for hedge funds. Prior to joining Lazard, William was with Deutsche Bank in Germany and France. He earned an MBA from Columbia Business University and a BA from Columbia University. He is a member of Columbia Business School’s Board of Overseers as well as Chairman of the school’s Advisory Board of the Heilbrunn Center for Graham & Dodd.
William is a board member of the International Center of Photography, a world-leading museum and school of photography, a trustee of The Buckley School, and a board member of Charity Navigator, the leading charity evaluator in the United States. He also serves on the Board of Directors of New York City Global Partners, which promotes New York’s interaction with cities around the world.
