Future Leaders

The Mission

In the UK, only a quarter of the most disadvantaged children achieve five good GCSEs (including English and Maths). Their chances of getting three As at A level are less than 1%.

Future Leaders believes every child has potential and is committed to helping them realise it.

The Programme

Effective, inspirational school leadership can significantly address educational disadvantage. Future Leaders is an intensive three year programme that provides talented individuals with specialist skills to improve the life chances of disadvantaged pupils. It is developing the next generation of headteachers to run the most challenging UK schools.

Each year, up to 75 participants are rigorously recruited; the programme combines a year-long apprenticeship in an urban challenging school, cutting-edge UK and US based training, residential courses and seminars. Participants also receive on the job training, supported by intensive leadership coaching with the aim that they become senior leaders after 12 months, apply to the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) after three years, and overtime successful headteachers.

Leaders on the programme deliver high impact projects in their schools and strongly influence the staff around them. Some already occupy key headships, and have been instrumental in turning around whole schools – in one case in London, achieving 23% improvement in good GCSE passes last year alone.

Participants and residency schools are recruited for London, the North West, the West Midlands and now also Yorkshire and the Humber, Bristol and the South Coast.
