Future Leaders

The Mission

Every child has potential. We help them realise it.

Future Leaders aims to recruit, train and support the next generation of headteachers for challenging urban secondary schools, in order to make a lasting difference to the lives of pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds. It is creating an enduring network of talented and inspiring senior leaders and high performing schools, with the skills and experience to transform deprived urban education.

The Future Leaders Programme*

After a year-long apprenticeship in a ‘residency school’ under a successful urban headteacher, cutting-edge UK and US-based training, and coaching and mentoring from education leaders, participants should gain a senior leadership role after 12 months. They should also be accepted onto NPQH within three years, and obtain a headship position after an intense four years. Participants and residency schools are recruited for London, the North West, the West Midlands and Yorkshire and the Humber and NOW ALSO Bristol and the South Coast.

*The Future Leaders programme is now one route of the National College’s (formerly NCSL) new Accelerate to Headship programme. The other route, Tomorrow’s Heads, is for teachers and non teaching professionals who have their sights set on headship in primary, special and non-urban secondary schools.
