Lifting children out of poverty through high quality education in India

9,121 disadvantaged children are learning to write and speak English

Using our phonics-based teaching method, their average scores have been at least double those of pupils taught by traditional methods

667 children, of whom half were not enrolled in any school before, are now attending affordable, high quality primary schools as part of our Delhi pilot

Too many disadvantaged children in India never complete school and do not acquire the skills, notably English language, that will help them to escape poverty.

Our vision is to have an immediate and profound impact on children's life prospects in India by offering them an affordable, quality primary education.

Firstly, our English language programme gives children from deprived backgrounds the opportunity to transform their future prospects by becoming proficient in the language. Using a phonics-based interactive teaching method previously inaccessible to governments and low cost private schools, we achieve rapid results.

Secondly, our school access programme is now being piloted in one of the poorest areas of Delhi. While a new law requires private schools to set aside a quarter of their places to non-fee paying children, in reality take up of these places has been slow. To ensure vulnerable children benefit from the new law, we have identified affordable, quality schools and promoted them to poorer families, offering vouchers to cover additional schooling expenses such as uniforms and text books.

Both programmes offer long-term affordable models to tackle India's education challenges and have the potential to be scaled up throughout the country.
