Teaching Leaders

The Mission
To grow a movement of outstanding middle leaders whose teams measurably improve the life chances of children in urban schools.
Our vision is of a society where children’s life chances are not shackled by social class, or restricted by educational disadvantage. Complex urban schools face a unique set of challenges in the contemporary climate, but one truth unites them all: every child has potential, and excellence in leadership can help them to realise this.
The Programme
Teaching Leaders aims to measurably raise levels of pupil achievement through the development of effective middle leaders, in recognition of the significant impact they have in raising standards & aspirations of young people today.
Developed in partnership with four of the UK’s most progressive educational organizations – ARK, the National College, Teach First and Future Leaders – Teaching Leaders provides cutting edge training, coaching and professional development for high potential middle leaders.
Over an innovative two-year programme, our participants will gain a holistic development experience and unique personalised coaching. An impact-focused Improvement Initiative is at the heart of the Teaching Leaders programme, providing the opportunity to practically implement the skills and qualities our middle leaders will acquire.
The programme was launched in 2008, with 2010 seeing our third cohort beginning their challenging journey. So far, the programme has experienced huge success with 35% of the pilot cohort gaining promotion, whilst 100% of participants have remained in complex urban schools in order to maximise their impact on pupil achievement.
Teaching leaders now has 79 participants across 53 London schools – and has secured support from all the major political parties for the third cohort in 2010. Yet it is more than just a programme; Teaching Leaders aims to provide an experience to expand middle leaders’ horizons and open doors to progressive opportunities.
