November update
This issue marks the anniversary of ARK’s Small Group Home service in Bulgaria. It also looks ahead to the impact of ARK’s academy roll out in the UK and provides estimates for the numbers of pupils whose education will be transformed as a result.Also in this issue, Petra Nemcova reports on her visit to the School Leaders for India (SLI) programme. During her visit Petra met SLI participants including Zareer Aga, who is the subject of this month’s ‘Life in the Day’ article and saw the impact that participants are already having on the motivation of the children they are teaching.

This issue explains the work of ARK’s Children in Care team in Bulgaria, who despite working within the extremely difficult context of political resistance to closure of institutions and child care reform has made enormous progress. It also explains ARK Schools’ pioneering model through which our academies endeavour to deliver sustainable academic success. ‘A Life in the Day of’ features Eva Ward-Gancheva, Social Work Consultant from Stara Zagora, Bulgaria.

September update
This issue celebrates the achievement of ARK’s antiretroviral therapy team which, at the end of June, exceeded its treatment targets, twenty one months ahead of schedule. The ‘personal story’ shares the impact their work has on children living in remote areas of South Africa. This issue also features the story of Rebecca Curtis, who was one of the founding participants of the Future Leaders programme and is now Small School Head at Evelyn Grace Academy, one of the three new ARK Academies that will open in London this month. The Hope and Homes for Children and ARK Partnership for Romania reports on the progress made in Maramures county.

July update
This issue highlights the next step in ARK’s HIV/AIDS strategy which aims to dramatically improve the standards of care in preventing mother to child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) in Sub-Saharan Africa. It features ‘A Day in the Life of’ Sister Iris Matinise, senior nurse at Mfueleni Clinic in Western Cape, South Africa and one of the first nurses employed to work on ARK’s antiretroviral therapy programme. This month’s ‘Personal Story’ is about a Bulgarian child living in one of ARK’s Small Group Homes who recently succeeded in a competitive exam to win a place at the Stara Zagora Music School.

June update

May update
This issue introduces ARK’s exciting new pilot programme in India which will train 232 school leaders by 2011, ensuring quality education for 92,800 children. It also announces ARK’s partnership in Romania with Hope and Homes for Children which will enable the completion of the first ever closure of an entire county’s institutions, replacing them with a modern prevention –focused child care system.

April update
This issue focuses on the success of ARK’s Antretroviral Therapy programme in South Africa, and pays tribute to the late Dr Ivan Toms, Director of Health in Cape Town who was pivotal in helping to launch this programme in 2003 and to make ARK’s vision in South Africa a reality. It features ‘A life in the day of’ ARK’s Director of Ventures whose team works to launch new programmes and provide assistance to existing programme teams to develop and roll-out related initiatives. This month’s personal story is about a teenager who has benefitted from ARK’s support of the Teens and Toddlers programme.

It features ‘A life in the day of’ ARK’s Grant Access Programme Manager in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, and reports on the closure of the Nadejda Home for Children Deprived of Parental Care. This month’s personal story is about a child who has developed rapidly since being placed in one of ARK’s Small Group Homes.
